If rail travel is on your agenda you may find this useful, I certainly did. When I first checked out this search facility I was very impressed. A couple of things I didn't know was that you can save up to 65% when you buy train tickets in advance, and that sometimes it can actually work out CHEAPER to buy TWO SINGLES than it can be to buy a return ticket.

Compared to the multiple choice, and very confusing ticket options you are presented with at the train station, it was quite refreshing. One of the examples quoted me a price of Ł31.54, travelling from Edinburgh to London King's Cross station, representing a total saving of Ł69.86. Of course, much depends on what day you plan to travel, but the same rule applies wherever you buy your train tickets, so it's certainly worth having a look.

First Scotrail offer numerous ticket options and discounts, and apart from the station, you can buy train tickets on board, although no discounts are available.

So apart from saving money, it's advisable to buy train tickets in advance to guarantee a seat, especially when travelling to other parts of the UK.
