Scotland Day Trips - Coach Tours - Holidays In Scotland

Choosing a well earned holiday or short break could be just what you need for a chance to relax and enjoy some Scottish hospitality, but with so many options available how exactly do you choose the best places to go?

Stravannan Beach Invergowrie Edinburgh Goatfell

If you know exactly what you're looking for, that's great. Maybe you're unsure, because you don't know enough about the country. Rest assured, wherever your interests lie, whether it's in culture, history or breathtaking scenery, you're guaranteed to find it on my selected Scotland trips.

Many people visit Scotland for our History and Culture Tours. Some come for our fabulous Outdoor Activities, like golf, hiking and cycling. I would say that the best way to see Scotland is by walking, but unless you are a keen hiker then driving is recommended to allow you to see the best of the countryside, and driving here isn't too bad, especially in the Highlands.

I personally enjoy nothing better than just doing my own thing, and if that's your preference, you should hire a car and go on different Scotland trips every day. You can even plan your journeys in advance with the very helpful AA Route Planner. Now you might find that each trip you take will be better than the previous one, the secret is in knowing where to go.

The places I have written about here are all personal favourites of mine, and I believe they are among some of the best places to see in Scotland.

Some of you may prefer the culture and nightlife of the city, but a lot of people take Scotland trips to enjoy beautiful scenery and a relaxed pace. It's really up to you, but if you live in the city then maybe you'd be best opting for a quiet setting with stunning views, but close enough to let you explore the lochs and the charming wee towns and villages around them.

I'm fortunate enough to be living on the West Coast, and although I love visiting Glasgow and Edinburgh, two of our most beautiful cities, it's always nice to return home to appreciate the wonderful views that I have here.

One of my favourite Scotland trips was a simple drive from my home town of Port Glasgow, on the River Clyde, to Fort William in the north. The views on the Clyde were superb as I crossed over the Erskine Bridge and drove on through Dumbartonshire, to eventually be met by the stunning vista presenting itself on the banks of Loch Lomond. Could it get any better?

It did. Driving through Glencoe and taking in the panoramic views amidst land rich in history, was absolutely incredible. And then the sight of the spectacular Ben Nevis was the icing on the cake. It was magnificent.

Sorry, I'm rambling on again, but it is so easy to get carried away with the beauty of the Scottish lochs and countryside, so without further ado, let me introduce you to some of my favourite places for Scotland trips.

Places To Go On Day Trips :

Scottish Beach
Scotland's Best Beaches
We have many fabulous beaches, and although some are quite remote, they're well worth visiting. Scotland trips have to include a beach, so I've listed some of the best for fantastic scenery, glorious white sand, and relaxation.

The Waverley
A leisurely cruise on the River Clyde is an excellent way of seeing the west coast of Scotland. The Waverley, the world's last sea-going paddle steamer has regular sailings to Arran, Rothesay and the Kyles of Bute. Sailings are from Glasgow's Anderson Quay, or from Greenock and Ayr.

Loch Katrine
Loch Katrine
Rob Roy MacGregor territory. Loch Katrine is surrounded by mountains on all sides, and has supplied pure water to the city of Glasgow since 1859. Tourists can take a cruise on the passenger steamship, Sir Walter Scott.

Isle of Kerrera
Isle of Kerrera
This is possibly the quietest place in the whole of Scotland. A short ferry trip from Oban, and almost car free. If ever you need to escape from everything and enjoy some peace and seclusion, you should go here.

Largs
Largs
Although most Scots just go for a Largs day trip, it has become popular as a holiday destination with visitors from other parts of the UK, and abroad. With it's fabulous location and facilities, Largs is ideal for Scotland trips.

Places To See On Scotland Coach Tours :

Coach Tours
Another great way of seeing the best of the country is with Scotland Coach Tours where you can experience the true flavour of Scotland exploring Lochs, Castles, and Whisky Distilleries in comfort, with the help of a guide. There are many excellent tours, from one day to six days.

Edinburgh Castle
Coach tours in Scotland will let you see some great places. Tours depart from either the capital, Edinburgh, or Glasgow, and you will be passing through places like historic Stirling, Glencoe, or other parts of the Scottish Highlands, depending on which tours you choose.

On extended Scotland bus tours you will see a lot more of the country and you will be staying in a hotel or guest house in either Oban or Inverness.

Places To Go For Holidays In Scotland :

The places featured here are places I have been to, and I recommend them all for short breaks and holidays in scotland. I have listed them in no particular order. Each one is a fabulous destination for different reasons.

Loch Lomond
Loch Lomond
The largest expanse of inland fresh water in Britain. It is an ideal base for Scotland trips, superbly situated for the city of Glasgow, and exploring the beautiful rustic countryside, a perfect location. Loch Lomond Hotels

George Square, Glasgow
City of Glasgow
Fantastic! The city boasts world famous art collections, the best shopping in the United Kingdom outside London, and the most vibrant and exciting nightlife in Scotland. You won't get bored in Glasgow. Hotels in Glasgow

Edinburgh's Royal Mile
City of Edinburgh
The capital of Scotland is absolutely brilliant. If you visit in August, two weeks might not be enough as there is so much going on, including The Edinburgh Military Tattoo and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Hotels in Edinburgh

Glencoe Path
The Scottish Highlands
Some very famous sights are to be seen in the Highlands of Scotland, like Glencoe, The Isle of Skye, Loch Ness and Ben Nevis. Ideal for touring, with lots of outdoor activities like golf, hiking and fishing. Hotels in the Highlands

Caerlaverock Castle, Dumfries
Dumfries & Galloway
This part of Scotland is steeped in history and legend, with lots of interest for students of history and folklore. Plenty of attractions, and became the hometown of our poet, Robert Burns. Hotels in Dumfries & Galloway

City of Aberdeen
City of Aberdeen
Nicknamed the Granite City because of it's many fine granite buildings. Great for Scotland trips if you're looking for a host of events and festivals, and a vibrant music scene for some great nightlife. Hotels in Aberdeen

Sunset Over Skye
Isle of Skye
Well written about in both music and poetry, Skye could possibly be your ideal holiday destination. Probably the best of Scotland trips for hiking, with fantastic scenery, and offers something for everyone. Hotels in Isle of Skye

There's a couple of places I haven't written about, and with very good reason. There's a great site that will provide you with all the information you need for travelling to Fife. Scotland's Enchanting Kingdom will introduce you to the Kingdom of Fife in Scotland, to the place, the people, the culture, the food and the 'home' of Golf at St Andrews. You'll love it.

Another great site is about Oban, Argyll, written by a local with a few places you won't see in the glossy brochures thrown in for good measure. If coming to Scotland, you must come here! A welcome awaits you ....
