Planning A Scottish Wedding

Discover_Scotland > Scottish Wedding Guide

If you're planning a Scottish wedding, you should find this page helpful, especially if you're not resident in Scotland. You'll find links to the Laws of Marriage in Scotland, Passport and Visa requirements, Locations, Venues, Wedding Planners, Attire & Accessories, and Travel & Accommodation.

Scottish Wedding
Scotland provides the ideal setting for almost any kind of wedding ceremony, from the traditional to the unusual, so whatever venue and location you decide on, you're guaranteed a wedding that you and your guests will remember for life.

Of course our Scottish castle weddings have always been a popular choice, but for the more unusual settings we have had wedding ceremonies at Edinburgh Zoo, on Cairngorm Mountain, and even cruising on Loch Ness. It seems you can get married almost anywhere.

Scottish Wedding
A traditional wedding in Scotland will see the bride in white gown, shoes, veil and tiara, and bouquet of flowers.

The groom will be in morning suit, lounge suit, or more probably in full highland dress, consisting of the kilt (with his Clan Tartan if applicable) and sporran, tartan or white hose, jacket and bonnet, and a sgian dhubh (black knife) tucked in the hose. The father of the bride, the best man, and some of the male wedding guests will also be dressed in the full highland outfit.

But before we get too carried away with the romantic offerings that Scotland has, I would recommend that you familiarise yourself with the Laws of Marriage in Scotland, and what's required for visiting Scotland.

Legalities & Conditions

The marriage laws in Scotland are not too strict, but you do have to give notice of your intention to marry, you must both be at least 16 years old, free to marry, not of the same sex, and not related. You do not have to reside in Scotland prior to your marriage, you can get married the same day you arrive, as long as you have previously served proper notice and the necessary paperwork is in order. If you're from outwith the UK, you will need a passport, but entry without a visa is possible from many countries.

  • You should look at the General Register Office for Scotland website for full information on all the legalities for getting married in Scotland.

  • You should also check with the UK Tourist Office for information about passport and visa requirements when visiting from outwith Scotland.

    Making Arrangements

Once you know what the legal requirements are, it's time to start making arrangements for your Scotland wedding. The first and most obvious things are :

  • You will have to decide on a date, and whether you want a religious or a civil ceremony. Once you've done that, then all the other arrangements that you make will affect not only you, but also your invited guests.

  • Will a Scottish wedding be practical for all the guests you want to attend? The location and venue are of prime importance, and you should spend considerable time over this before you decide on your final selection. After this, it's down to the finer details, and there are many.

  • Do you want to have a Scottish piper? What about menus, the cake, the music, there's so much to consider right down to the wedding favours, so it may be advisable to engage the services of a wedding planner.

    Wedding Planners

Of course you can take care of everything yourself, but by engaging the services of a professional you can relax knowing that everything will be taken care of, and none of the more finer details will be overlooked.

  • Celebrate in Scotland are Scottish Wedding Planners who will take care of everything for you including all documentation and legal requirements.

  • Litu are Wedding Planners and Consultants who specialise in Church weddings, Castle weddings, and unique Scottish venues.
